Step Back in Time with Sarah Shaber

Sarah Shaber is an award-winning mystery author from North Carolina. Her WWII historical mystery series begins with LOUISE'S WAR. It features young widow Louise Pearlie, a government girl who works for the Office of Strategic Services, the United States’ first spy agency.   Sarah introduced Ashe County to Louise Pearlie at the On the Same Page Literary Festival in 2016 and since then has completed the sixth book in the Louise Pearlie series, LOUISE’S LIES. 

As Ashe library launches new Involving Books programming this month with a focus on honoring our local veterans, Sarah was invited back to talk about the latest adventures of this WWII heroine.  Louise Pearlie has been compared by some readers as a “grown-up Nancy Drew.”   Once you start reading one of Shaber’s mysteries it is hard to put it down until finished.  They are real page-turners! 

Pick up a copy of this featured read at the library and save the date for Sarah’s visit.  Sarah will be in town at 5:30 p.m. for an “eat and greet” event at Boon Docks Brew Haus on October 27 and then will visit the library for a discussion of her books at 10:00 a.m. on October 28. 

Shaber is also the author of the Professor Simon Shaw mysteries, BLOOD TEST, and editor of TAR HEEL DEAD. Her first book, SIMON SAID, won the St. Martin’s Press/Malice Domestic Award for best first traditional mystery. She is the Bouchercon15 (World Mystery Conference, 2015) Local Guest of Honor. 

Following the Louise Pearlie book talk, there will be complimentary programs to honor local veterans and information about taking part in Ashe County’s Local Veteran’s History Project in the month of November (dates TBA).  Ashe Library is partnering with Museum of Ashe County History, Ashe County Veterans Association, and Ashe County JROTC to lead the Veterans programming, made possible by a grant from Ashe Community Foundation, and funding from an Ida C. Marsh donation.

Dates to remember in October:  

 Children’s Programs

• Baby Bounce meets every Friday at 10:30 a.m. for ages birth to 2 years.  Enjoy stories, rhymes,bounces, and songs with a stay-and-play social time afterwards. 
• Tot Time takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays for ages 2 and 3.  Wiggle, giggle, laugh, sing, and create.  A fun-filled time featuring stories, music, and a craft.
• Storytime for ages 4 and 5 is at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday.  Join us for ABC adventures with stories, art, and music.  On October 19 a special storytime will count for Read for The Record.  This event occurs nationwide as all children everywhere read, or are read to the same book!  This year the chosen book is “Quackers” by, Liz Wong.
• Marilyn Agnew, early childhood education consultant, will unveil an exciting reading program for children and their caretakers at 10:30 a.m. on October 11, 12, and 13.
• Lego Block Party, for grades 1 – 5, will be at 4:00 p.m. on October 19

Tween Programs

•  Come learn all about the world of cosplay, comic-cons, and costume adventures at 4:00p.m. on October 26.

Teen Programs

• Teens meet at 4:00 p.m. on October 3 for video gaming fun.
• Teen Art Studio takes place at 4:00 p.m. on October 10.
• Board Game Café / Teen Advisory Council will meet at 4:00 p.m. on October 17.
• Teen Craft Club meets at 4:00 p.m. on October 24.
• A Teen Halloween Party will celebrate with food, games, and a cosplay costume contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. on October 31.

• Yoga Club meets in the library’s downstairs meeting room at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays.
• Join us at Boon Docks Brew Haus to meet and greet Sarah Shaber, author of Louise’s Lies, at 5:30 p.m. on October 27.  Sarah will be leading a discussion about her latest Louise Pearlie mystery and her research on 1940s wartime era at 10:00 a.m. on October 28.
• Brouhaha Book Club meets at 5:30 p.m. on October 30 in Boondocks. There is no assigned reading for this book club. Come as you are, read what you want, and join the lively conversation!
• Audiobook & Coloring Club meets at 5:30 p.m. on October 31.  This book club celebrates reading as a group experience.  Join us monthly to listen to short stories and relax with adult coloring sheets.

All Ages

• Help us brighten and improve the lives of breast cancer survivors at a Knitted Knocker Knit-a-thon from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 14.  All skill levels are invited to participate (there will be instruction for beginner knitters or crocheters).  We plan to provide materials and serve lunch for our volunteer knitters at the knit-a-thon. 
• The Community Drum Circle meets at 5:30 p.m. on October 10 and 24.  Join the celebration of drums, while exploring the soul and spirit of music!.
• Mountain Music Slow Jam will meet from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on October 6 and 20 in the downstairs meeting room (after-hours access through side door on lower parking lot).  Get together with other musicians and jam.  Songs are explained as to timing, breaks, etc… and played in slow time.  Designed for beginners, all skill levels are welcome.

Special Events:

• Positive Parenting Group meets at 5:30 p.m. on October 3.  All parents and grandparents are invited to attend. Parents will meet in the community room for tips and skills on managing emotions in a positive way, while children meet in the youth services area to create emoji pumpkins. A meal will be served and registration is required.  Call 336.620.1904 to reserve a spot.
• Visit the library tent at Museum of Ashe County History’s Autumn Leaf Festival on October 7.
• Visit the library tent at Festival of the Frescoes in Glendale Springs on October 14.
• In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, a “Day of the Dead” celebration takes place at 3:30 p.m. on October 12.  Join us for food, crafts, face painting, and discover NEW bilingual books!
• Trick-or-Treat with Mystery Characters begins at 3:30 p.m. on October 31.  Fun for the whole family!
