Knitted Knocker Knit-a-thon!

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Ashe County Public Library is organizing a Knitted Knockers Knit-a-thon to benefit survivors of breast cancer.  1 out of 8 women will experience breast cancer sometime in their lifetime. There are 50,000 mastectomies done a year in the US alone and 90% will wear a breast prosthesis at least for awhile

Knitted Knockers are special soft, comfortable, handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.  Many women find the traditional breast prosthesis hot, heavy, and expensive.

The Knit-a-thon will take place at the Library from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on October 14, 2017.  All skill levels are invited to participate (there will be instruction for beginner knitters or crocheters).  We plan to provide materials and serve lunch for our volunteer knitters at the knit-a-thon.  Help us brighten and improve the lives of breast cancer survivors.  Pick-up copies of patterns and a list of approved yarns for this project at the library or, visit the library’s website.  Join us for an educational lunch-and-learn to find out more about Knitted Knockers and breast health information.  Feel free to come and go as needed or, spend the day in fellowship with other knitters.  If you are not the crafty type and are interested in supporting this project, you can still support the cause by making a donation to help defray the cost of supplies and materials. 

Ashe Servicer for Aging is a co-partner in this charity event with another knitting group, The Critter Knitters.  The Critter Knitters meet every second Monday from 10:00 a.m.  through 12:00 p.m. at the Senior Center and welcome all to join them.  Breast Cancer patients who would like to receive this FREE service can call Glenda Luther at Ashe Services for Aging to make an appointment to be fitted for a pair of "knockers."   (336) 246-4347.
